Mark 9:7 And there was a cloud that shadowed them, and a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is my beloved Son: hear Him.
My wife was speaking to me, telling me what was going on with one of our children. My mind was preoccupied with an issue at work. I literally did not hear a word she was telling me.
And so it was with the disciples, they were caught up with all that was going on; seeing Moses and Elijah speaking with Jesus. Jesus transformed before them. But that was not the primary intention of this scripture. Yes Jesus was speaking with Moses and Elijah, Jesus transfiguring before there eyes, these are all very important. But what was the point that God was trying to get across to the disciples and to us through this scripture?
You see my wife is very important, and so are my children. And when they speak to me it is my obligation to give them my full attention.
Yet there is someone who is way more important. God refers to Him as His beloved Son. He is the beloved above anyone else; above all creation, far above anyone or anything that exists. He is far above anything that may seem important. God placed Him above anything or anybody else.
So it is obvious that the Lord God wants us to pay close attention to what Jesus Christ tells us, and not only pay attention, but hear what He is saying to us; and far above anyone or anything else!
So when He speaks to us through His word the Bible we ought to listen. When He speaks to us through His ministers it is wise to pay close attention to what He is saying. And when the Master speaks to us through His Holy Spirit, learn to listen and become sensitive to His sweet still small voice. That you do not miss out what God wants to tell you. Unless you find your mind preoccupied by other things and not hear when God is speaking.
Let us spend much time in prayer and in His wonderful word, and less time in the things of this world. This world will pass away one day. But God’s word will remain forever.
The word of God is the switch that turns on the light to things of God. Genesis 1:3 Then God said, “Let there be light:” And there was light. John 1:1 In the beginning was that Word, and that Word was with God, and that Word was God. 4. In it was life, and that life was the light of men.
Let us hear what that Word is speaking that we may obtain the light that leads to true life; “Jesus Christ” God’s beloved Son.
To hear the Lord we must stay attentive to Him. Sometimes self and all our problems can rob our attention from Him. This worlds pleasures can steal our focus from Jesus. Yet the Lord warns us to abide in Him. He tells us to watch and pray lest He comes and finds us carousing, occupied with things that have nothing to do with Him.
If your eyes are looking at something you should not see. Or your hands making you do something you know is wrong. Or your feet are taking you somewhere you should not go.
Cut it out of your life now.
Rather may the Lord find you faithful to Him.
Amen?
